Kimono, Matcha, and Light: A New Year’s Tea Gallery
Some time ago I began a project to photograph the traditional aspects of Japan. I kicked the whole thing off with Japanese tea ceremony and a few photographs of women who practice the craft.
Over time, I have come to be well acquainted with these women as well as a larger group of people who practice tea ceremony. In addition to referrals, more work, and an expanded network, the result has been regular invitations to various tea ceremony affairs, large and small.
These invites have provided me with numerous opportunities to attend tea ceremony-related events and have allowed me to build up quite the collection of photos. Instead of letting these captures gather digital dust on a hard drive, I’ve decided to open up my archives. The images featured below are from a special gathering this past January: the Hatsukama, or the very first tea ceremony of the New Year.
